Global outlook and application

Current research is still looking at the optimisation of two-component aquaponics systems, but ideas for three-component systems are now also making the rounds. In what is referred to as a tritrophic system, researchers aim to combine insect rearing with the more familiar plant cultivation and fish rearing. Non-recyclable plant waste from hydroponics is intended to be the food base for the insects, which in turn would enter such a system as fish food.
